Party in the Park celebrates peace, diversity and equality

31 January 2018

One of the biggest events in the Celebrate Woking calendar makes a welcome return this July. Party in the Park is back and the organisers are extending an invitation to traders and stallholders, to express their interest in participating in the event, on Saturday 7 July 2018 at Woking Park.

The free family-friendly festival attracts thousands of partygoers every year and is one of the most hotly anticipated events in Surrey. Woking Borough Council is seeking expressions of interest from traders, stallholders, workshop facilitators, local groups and artists who want to be a part of the fun.

This year the Borough will remember those who fought for peace, diversity and equality a century ago.

On November 11 2018, it will be exactly 100 years since the guns fell silent on the battlefields of France, and World War One finally came to an end. This year also sees the centenary of the monumental victory won by women as their tireless campaign for the right to vote was won. The contribution by Woking-based suffragette, Dame Ethel Smyth, was instrumental in achieving the vote.

After the Armistice, local papers described how Woking “gave full and enthusiastic expression to the joy it felt over the conclusion of peace” by throwing an enormous Peace Celebration across the town with parades, sports, games, music and tea.

To mark the centenary, vintage festivities from the era will be recreated and brought up to date with a modern twist. All of the usual highlights will return including the Main Stage packed with live entertainment, the ever-popular Big Screen showing a family film, a fun fair, sports, animals, crafts, workshops, lots of food stalls from all over the globe and much more. Dance Woking will again curate dance by an eclectic mix of local groups and professional companies, giving visitors the chance to watch, perform and take part.

Cllr Mark Pengelly, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Cultural and Community Development, said: “This year will see heightened celebrations across the world as we commemorate 100 years since peace fell across the battlefields of Europe and men and women were finally able to return home to their families. In the UK, we also saw a triumph for women’s rights, which has been so crucial to shaping our society.

“A century on from the peace celebrations, we are going to show that Woking still knows how to throw a party. We want traders, stallholders and community groups to get in touch and find out how they can help us to make this free family celebration of equality, diversity and unity one to be remembered for another hundred years.

“Thanks to the participation of many local groups and businesses, residents and visitors to Woking will be assured of another fantastic, fun-filled day.”
