Sports in the Park – participate in a family sports day at Party in the Park
21 June 2018
Families and groups of friends are being invited to participate in a vintage-themed sports day in the Freedom Leisure Sports Zone at Party in the Park on Saturday 7 July 2018.
Records show that sports day events took place during the Peace Celebrations in Woking Park which followed the end of World War One a centuary ago. Schools across Woking participated in friendly races and competitions and a long winners’ roll-call was published in the event write up after the party.
Recreating this community spirit, energetic entrants of all ages will have the chance to complete a fun, all-inclusive circuit of traditional sports and games, from bean bag throwing to hurdles.
Cllr Colin Kemp, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Cultural and Community Development, said: “No matter what your memories were of P.E. class, this activity will be enough to make anyone nostalgic about sports at school.
“It is wonderful to know that with all of the monumental social change that has taken place over the last 100 years - not least two world wars and the dramatic advancement of women’s rights - people still derive as much pleasure as ever from a simple ‘egg and spoon’ style game!
“You don’t have to be the next Olympic Champion to be able to join in these fun sports day activities. All ages and abilities can enjoy the games and we encourage family units and groups of friends to enter a team together.”
The Freedom Lesiure Sports Zone can be found in the Main Field of Woking Park and the fun kicks off at 12noon. Family Sports in the Park sessions will be taking place at 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm.
Alongside the sports day activities there will be opportunities to join in with Freedom Leisure’s Mettafit HIIT, Body Balance and Swing Train fitness classes and the chance to try out a variety of sports including cycling, rugby, tennis, football and archery.
